Can You Really Do Both? The Truth No One Tells Moms About Work and Motherhood

“Can I be fully present as a mother and fully present in my work?”

For so long, it feels like women have been asked to choose: Stay home or build a career. Pour into your children or pursue your calling. But what if that’s a false choice? I don’t believe God designed us to live divided lives. I believe He calls us to live integrated ones.

In Ecclesiastes 3:1, we’re reminded: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Motherhood is a sacred season, but it doesn’t cancel out the other gifts, passions, and callings God has placed within us.

For me, the answer to “Are you working or staying home?” is simple, even if it feels unconventional: I’m doing both. I want to be deeply present with my children, to notice the small moments, to build a home filled with peace, to nurture their hearts. But I also feel a pull toward something beyond my home, a desire to serve, to create, to impact other women in meaningful ways. And I don’t think that’s something to feel guilty about.

In Proverbs 31, we see a woman who embodies this beautifully. The Proverbs 31 woman is often remembered for her devotion to her family but she was also engaged in meaningful work. She managed a household, yes, but she also bought fields, planted vineyards, and created goods to sell. She was both present at home and active beyond it.

Her life wasn’t about perfect balance, it was about faithful stewardship. And maybe that’s the shift we need to make. Instead of striving for “balance,” where everything is evenly distributed (which rarely feels attainable), what if we pursued integration? A life where our roles as mothers, workers, creators, and women of faith flow together under God’s guidance.

In Colossians 3:23, we’re encouraged: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Whether we are changing diapers, leading a meeting, running a small business, or serving our community, our work matters when it’s done for Him.

And the truth is, many mothers are already living this out. So often I hear: “I’m home with my kids, but I also…”

  • run an Etsy shop

  • substitute teach

  • create content

  • work at a daycare

  • serve in my church

  • build something quietly, faithfully, in the margins of nap times and early mornings

This doesn’t make us distracted. It makes us dynamic. God did not make us one-dimensional. He made us with depth, creativity, and purpose.

So can you have your cake and eat it too? Maybe the better question is: Can you walk in the fullness of who God created you to be?

I believe the answer is yes, not perfectly, not without tension, but with grace. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about doing it all. It’s about being faithful with what He’s placed in your hands, in this season. And trusting that He will lead you in both your motherhood and your calling.
